Phrasing regarding condensation

Terms related to T-STRIPE and fogged windows

Terms on all topics concerning windows, ventilation and how condensation can form.

Fogged Windows

Windows with condensation are often referred to as "fogged windows". This refers to the condensed water on the window which restricts visibility. Fogged windows are a problem and should be avoided. The best way is through ventilation and heating and the use of the T-STRIPE window heating.

Living Climate

Humans feel most comfortable at a humidity level of 45 to 65 percent.

Air & Water

Air always contains water in the form of water vapor. This amount of water varies. The amount of water that air can absorb depends on the respective temperature - the warmer it is, the more water can be stored.

Air & Saturation

The saturation level of the air is reached when the air contains the maximum possible amount of water at a specific temperature.

Air & Humidity

When air is heated, it can absorb more water. If it cools down, however, it can absorb less moisture, thereby increasing the relative humidity in the room. If the air is cooled down so much on cool surfaces, such as windows, that the dew point is reached, then the excess water condenses on the pane.

Dew Point

Dew point is the point at which the room air temperature cools down to such an extent that condensation occurs. During the cold season, it can happen that inner surface temperatures are at or below the dew point.

Knowing the dew point is important to determine whether condensation will occur and when and where it will be released. The dew point is the point at which the room air temperature cools down enough for condensation to be released.

Mold

Mold cultures develop due to condensation. They shimmer in colors ranging from black, black-blue to blue-gray and blue-gray-green and can spread on virtually any surface as long as it is damp enough: Their spores develop mold at just 80 percent humidity.

Mold infestation should always be examined more closely, as it can be an indication that there is increased moisture in the underlying wood or masonry, which can have various causes such as sweating walls, leaking water pipes, poor ventilation, etc.

The discoloration in mold infestation occurs when surfaces affected by fungus partially dry out.

Mold Removal

Once the source of moisture has been eliminated, mold can usually be easily removed - for example, with a brush. Before doing so, the mold should be killed with a fungicide to prevent the spores from spreading elsewhere in the room. After cleaning, another application of fungicide should be applied to the affected area to prevent new mold growth in the long term. Caution: A fresh coat of paint alone does not eliminate mold.
